The gallery is based on a simple MaxiGallery call in a chunk (included in the zipped archive), using a number of images from PDPhoto.org. The original of this template has a more complex structure, with a single full-size image and a row of thumbnails beneath. The way to do this with MaxiGallery is described in the wiki documentation.
The main content section is a static representation of what would normally be a Ditto call. The exact format of the posts is easily replicated with a Ditto template. Of course, your main page content does not need to be a listing of news or blog posts.
